OIL & GAS (ONSHORE/ OFFSHORE)

STUDY FOR VERIFICATION AND VALIDATION OF RADIUS OF COVERAGE FOR THE PLACING OF DETECTORS OF THE FIRE AND GAS SYSTEM OF THE ABK-A COMPRESSION PLATFORM.

CONTEXT OF THE PROJECT

As a result of the modernization of the installations in the Gulf of Mexico, it is necessary to have a highly reliable Fire and Gas System, which must detect hazardous conditions to provide early warning and thereby take the appropriate mitigation measures protecting the personnel and the installation based on the current methodologies and regulations.

OBJECTIVE

To develop a study of gases dispersion and coverage for the placement of detectors (combustible gas, toxic gas and fire) through specialized commercial software guaranteeing an adequate level of performance of the fire and gas detection system in order to provide an early alert and take the mitigation actions appropriate to protect the different receptors of risk identified according to the current applicable regulations.

TECHNICAL CONTEXT

The coverage zones and degree of performance for the detection of Fire, Combustible Gas and Toxic Gas were defined based on an updating of the PLG plans with the location of the equipment according to the on-site survey; subsequently, based on the Hazards Identification study, the equivalent points and diameters susceptible to fires were identified in order to model the dispersion and scope of the concentration of the gases through the specialized commercial software PHAST; finally the Geographic Coverage Mapping of the detectors of combustible gas, toxic gas and fire was done through the specialized software Effigy of Kenexis.

As a result of the above, actions were recommended regarding the placement, relocation and installation of detectors of combustible gas, toxic gas and fire ensuring compliance with the coverage parameters defined and required by the regulations.

RESULTS OBTAINED

As a conclusion of the project the zoning of the installation gave rise to the relocation and addition of combustible gas, toxic gas and fire detectors, ensuring the optimization of the coverage and increasing the reliability of the system; this ensured that the fire and gas system was more robust as an Independent Layer of Protection and in compliance with the current regulations.
